Throughout the short stories Rufus at the Door, Winning Sarah Spooner, and Agatha McGee and the St.Isidore Seven, Jon Hassler uses symbolism to portrayed how the charters take on different traits to hold power. He uses this portrayal to show how characters may succeeded and fail. Throughout Rufus at the Door, Rufus's mother takes on the typical role of a female and fails. In Winning Sarah Spooner and Agatha McGee and the St.Isidore Seven both woman take on feminine traits along with Masculine traits to portray and hold power throughout the story.

  1. I like the way this is heading! The only thing I can add is maybe go in the direction of just one statement within the stories. Either talk about the feminine traits or the masculine traits that the women display. You could definitely take one of those and go into complete depth and analyze the scenes to an extreme amount. The stories you picked do very well with your thesis just maybe go in that direction instead. Good job! (:

  2. I like how you tied the symbolism into how it affects the character's choice of famine or masculine traits. Maybe talk about how Hassler indirectly is saying that females and males need to have some masculine traits to succeed in holding power. You could use the mother in Rufus at the Door as an example to show how by her staying static and sticking to only stereotypical female traits she wasn't able to succeed. Be specific on what exactly she fails to do because of her quiet, subtle female character. You picked stories that fit in really well together to prove the point that it takes both female and masculine traits to achieve and maintain power. Overall I really like your ideas and the way they all fit together, Good job:)

  3. I agree with jordyn, try to just talk about the women in the story through a gender lens as they follow masculine traits or feminine ones. Try to generalize it more with a straight forward thesis and then go from there. Over all it looks good though! Just keep your thesis around the same topic

  4. This is really good! It is very similar to what I wrote. Your thesis is very clear and well put together. It would be interesting to hear about the symbolism as it relates to power through the gender traits. I am wondering if you mean that if Rufus' mother would of succeeded if she had more masculine traits? You could go into more detail and give an idea on what evidence you plan to use. Good job(:
